Former Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo has highlighted weak and opaque institutions, corruption, limited political accountability, and poor public services as some of the greatest obstacles to effective governance in Africa.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony of Course 33 of the National Defence College in Abuja on Monday, the former leader stressed that the continent has the inherent capacity to address these challenges through deliberate reforms aimed at strengthening institutions and enhancing accountability.
According to him, the establishment of credible, transparent, and efficient systems remains central to reshaping Africa’s governance landscape and ensuring that citizens enjoy the dividends of democracy.
Akufo-Addo further cautioned African leaders against practices that undermine democratic values, such as intimidating the opposition, censoring the media, and restricting the activities of civil society groups. He emphasized that such actions erode democratic space and weaken the very institutions responsible for protecting the rights and freedoms of the people.
