ADC Distances Itself from Datti Baba-Ahmed’s Criticism

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has dismissed recent remarks by Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed, the Labour Party’s 2023 vice-presidential candidate, describing his comments as personal views that do not represent the position of the party or its coalition partners.

In a statement signed by Jackie Wayas, Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the ADC, the party reiterated its commitment to strengthening opposition alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Baba-Ahmed, while appearing on Channels Television’s Politics Today, had accused the emerging opposition coalition of “deceiving Nigerians” and argued that it lacked the capacity to rescue the country from underdevelopment. He also hinted at his intention to run alongside Mr. Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential election.

The ADC, however, emphasized that the coalition is a collective initiative built on consensus and national interest. According to the statement, the platform unites key political leaders including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, former Senate President David Mark, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, and Mr. Peter Obi.

“These leaders came together after broad consultations to put Nigeria’s future above partisan differences and to provide credible, compassionate leadership,” the ADC explained.

The party further recalled that Mr. Obi had openly endorsed the coalition under the ADC platform as the vehicle for the 2027 elections, stressing that no single group or party can bring about the change Nigeria needs. Obi, it noted, has consistently called for unity in dismantling poverty, insecurity, and bad governance.

Clarifying its stance, the ADC maintained that Baba-Ahmed’s remarks were entirely his own.

“Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed’s assertions are his personal opinions and do not reflect the position of the ADC or its coalition partners,” the statement read.

Nonetheless, the party acknowledged his reputation as a principled figure. “Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed is a respected voice who has always stood for integrity and justice. Since this coalition is a collective project requiring the strengths of all patriots, we hope he will join efforts to achieve the shared vision of a better Nigeria,” Wayas added.

Reiterating its mission to provide a transformative alternative to President Bola Tinubu’s administration, the ADC urged Nigerians to stand behind the coalition.

“Nigerians deserve clarity and unity in the pursuit of a better future. Let us rally behind the ADC and rescue Nigeria,” the party declared.
