The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed that it has launched a comprehensive investigation into the alleged assault of a retired Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) by a serving police inspector.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Superintendent of Police Adebisi Abimbola, disclosed that both parties involved in the incident were invited to the command and appeared on Monday, where preliminary interviews were conducted.
According to her, the Commissioner of Police has directed the Monitoring Unit to carry out a thorough, transparent, and impartial investigation into the allegation, emphasizing the command’s commitment to uncovering the truth.
“Both parties were at the command yesterday. They were interviewed, and the Commissioner of Police has ordered that a proper investigation be carried out,” Abimbola stated.
She explained that the police inspector accused of the assault denied the allegation, claiming he had never met the retired officer before and only encountered him on the day of the incident. The inspector further alleged that the retired CSP was driving against traffic at the time, a claim the retired officer has denied.
“At the moment, it is one person’s word against the other, as there are no witnesses. However, we are determined to get to the root of the matter,” the PPRO said.
Abimbola also dismissed reports suggesting that the inspector had not been invited or was boasting about being untouchable, clarifying that the officer had been identified and questioned by the command.
Responding to claims that the retired CSP was barred from driving, the police spokesperson said no such directive was issued by the police.
“He is not restricted from driving. His vehicle is with him. If he chooses not to drive, that is entirely his personal decision,” she added.
The Lagos State Police Command assured the public that appropriate disciplinary measures would be taken if the investigation establishes any wrongdoing by the inspector.
“If the allegations are proven and the inspector is found culpable, disciplinary action will certainly follow in line with police regulations,” Abimbola assured.
