ABUJA – Dr. Salamat Ahuoiza Aliu-Ibrahim, widely celebrated as West Africa’s first female certified neurosurgeon and Nigeria’s first indigenous-trained female neurosurgeon, has been appointed Medical Director of Freeman Children’s Clinic in Joplin, Missouri, United States.
Her appointment, which took effect on July 21, 2026, marks another significant milestone in a distinguished medical career defined by groundbreaking achievements in a specialty traditionally dominated by men.
Born in Ilorin, Kwara State, in 1980, Dr. Aliu-Ibrahim hails from Okene, Kogi State. She began her medical journey at the University of Ilorin College of Health Sciences, where she earned her medical degree before pursuing specialist training in neurosurgery in Nigeria.
She later expanded her expertise through advanced medical training in the United States. Her professional training includes a paediatric residency at the University of Texas Medical Branch, a neurosurgery residency at the National Hospital, Abuja, and a paediatric neurosurgery fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital, affiliated with Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Aliu-Ibrahim is widely recognised for breaking barriers as the first female certified neurosurgeon in West Africa and the first woman to complete neurosurgical training within Nigeria.
Before relocating to the United States, she served as a Senior Consultant Neurosurgeon at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), where she carried out complex brain and spinal surgeries while earning a reputation as one of Nigeria’s leading neurosurgeons.
Her achievements inspired many young female medical professionals, particularly in a field where women have historically been underrepresented.
Following her move to the United States, Dr. Aliu-Ibrahim continued to build her medical career, bringing her expertise to paediatric healthcare and assuming leadership roles within the American healthcare system.
Her latest appointment as Medical Director of Freeman Children’s Clinic underscores her continued commitment to improving children’s healthcare and further strengthens the global recognition of Nigerian-trained medical professionals.
