ABUJA — Vice President Kashim Shettima has commenced a two-week leave following the approval of President Bola Tinubu.
The development was confirmed in a statement issued on Thursday by the Vice President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communications, Stanley Nkwocha, who described the break as Shettima’s first official leave since he assumed office on May 29, 2023.
According to the statement, the Vice President will use the period for study, personal reflection and intellectual renewal aimed at strengthening his capacity for public service.
Nkwocha explained that the leave would also provide Shettima with the opportunity to review key government programmes, deepen his understanding of emerging national and global policy issues, and prepare for the responsibilities ahead as the Federal Government continues the implementation of the Renewed Hope Agenda.
He noted that since assuming office, Shettima has remained actively involved in coordinating and supervising several strategic government initiatives, particularly in the areas of economic development, food security, humanitarian affairs, digital transformation, job creation and regional cooperation.
The statement further highlighted the Vice President’s role as Chairman of the National Economic Council (NEC), where he regularly leads deliberations involving the 36 state governors, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and other senior government officials on policies affecting the economy and the welfare of Nigerians.
Beyond his domestic responsibilities, Nkwocha said Shettima has represented President Tinubu at several regional and international engagements, promoting Nigeria’s interests in economic integration, peace and security, climate action, investment and sustainable development.
The media aide added that the Vice President remains committed to supporting President Tinubu’s administration and advancing policies aimed at building a more secure, productive and prosperous Nigeria.
Shettima is expected to resume his official duties at the end of the two-week leave.
