Russian President Vladimir Putin has described the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, as a grave violation of moral principles and international law.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Putin said the reported assassination of Khamenei was unacceptable and contrary to globally recognised legal and humanitarian standards. He stressed that such an act undermines the foundations of international relations and respect for state sovereignty.
The Russian leader paid tribute to Khamenei, describing him as an outstanding statesman whose leadership significantly strengthened relations between Moscow and Tehran. According to Putin, Khamenei played a key role in elevating Russia-Iran ties to what both countries regard as a comprehensive strategic partnership.
Putin also extended his condolences to the family of the late Iranian leader, expressing sympathy to the Iranian government and its citizens during what he called a painful national moment. He said he hoped his message of condolence would be conveyed to Khamenei’s loved ones and to the people of Iran.
Meanwhile, Iran’s state media confirmed on Sunday that Khamenei was killed during coordinated United States and Israeli airstrikes carried out on Saturday. The reported development has heightened tensions across the Middle East, with global leaders reacting cautiously as details continue to emerge.
