The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared that he will once again support President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election, stating that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has failed to draw lessons from previous political developments.
Wike made the statement on Monday during a media briefing in Abuja, where he defended his continued backing of the President and other political figures aligned with him.
He stressed that his position was consistent with the stance he adopted ahead of the 2023 general election. According to him, his decision to support Tinubu at the time was not hidden and should not come as a surprise.
“I made it clear in 2023 that despite being a member of the PDP, I would work for the President. That was exactly what I did. I believed then, and I still believe, that the alternative options presented were not compelling enough,” he said.
The minister maintained that his political alignment remains unchanged as preparations gradually begin for the next election cycle. He expressed dissatisfaction with the PDP leadership, noting that he was not consulted during the party’s candidate selection process.
“As a serving minister and a key member of the party, I was not consulted on the candidates the PDP chose to present,” Wike stated.
He further explained that his political support would not be restricted by party affiliation. Instead, he said he would align with individuals and candidates committed to Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, regardless of their political platform.
“I have said it before: I will support candidates who stand with Mr President for his re-election. Party lines are secondary. What matters is their commitment to the President’s return in 2027. If they are with him, then I will stand with them,” he added.
Wike also criticised the opposition, insisting that the PDP has not taken time to reassess its strategies or reflect on past outcomes. He argued that his continued support for Tinubu is rooted in his assessment of leadership quality and the political options currently available.
His comments are likely to intensify discussions within the PDP and across the political landscape as early positioning for the 2027 election gathers momentum.
