The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has clarified that it is not conducting congresses in any part of the country, urging members and the general public to disregard reports suggesting otherwise.
In a statement issued on Monday, the National Chairman of the PDP, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, described the claims as false and misleading, stressing that the party has not authorised any congress at the state or national level.
Turaki alleged that the information was being circulated by individuals who have been expelled from the party. According to him, these former members are working in the interest of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) with the intention of destabilising the PDP and weakening Nigeria’s democratic structure.
“Our members and the general public are hereby notified that our party is not conducting congresses in any part of the country,” he said.
He further accused the individuals behind the claims of attempting to undermine the party for personal political gains, alleging that they had aligned themselves with the APC in exchange for appointments and other favours.
The PDP chairman maintained that the party would not allow its platform to be used as a bargaining tool with the ruling party, referencing what he described as similar actions during the recently concluded Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections.
He noted that such actions run contrary to the principles of multiparty democracy, which he described as essential for a diverse and pluralistic society like Nigeria.
Turaki called on party members and supporters to remain vigilant and to ignore any announcements or activities related to purported congresses in any state.
He clarified that the only ongoing nationwide exercise approved by the party is its digital membership registration, which he said has already commenced and is progressing smoothly.
The PDP leadership assured members that they would continue to receive updates as political developments unfold.
