Former presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has declared that he is willing to support Peter Obi or any other presidential candidate selected by the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2027 general elections, stressing that the party’s decision would be final and binding on all members.
Kwankwaso, who recently joined the opposition coalition within the NDC alongside Obi, disclosed that the party had already agreed to zone the 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria for a single four-year tenure.
Speaking during an interview on Arise TV’s PrimeTime programme, the former Kano State governor explained that the decision followed extensive consultations with party leaders and stakeholders across the country.
According to him, he is prepared to serve in any capacity assigned to him by the party, including becoming a running mate to a southern presidential candidate.
“If the party decides that I will be anybody’s running mate from the South, I am ready,” Kwankwaso said.
He explained that members of the coalition carefully examined the political situation in the country before agreeing on power rotation between the South and the North.
“Right from day one, we sat down together and looked at the situation on the ground in the country and decided to take a major decision, including zoning the presidency to the South for four years, after which it will return to the North,” he stated.
Kwankwaso added that many northern politicians accepted the arrangement because they believed it would help resolve long-standing political tensions surrounding power rotation, especially after the death of former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.
“We believe the best place to take it is the South so that we can eliminate the confusion that emanated from the death of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua. What is important now is not whether the President comes from the North or South, but having quality leadership by people who are determined, committed and enthusiastic about moving the country forward,” he said.
The former governor also revealed that he and Obi had already discussed strategies for addressing insecurity, particularly in Northern Nigeria.
“Peter Obi and I have discussed several ways to tackle insecurity. I have worked with people across different sectors and I am confident in my capacity,” he added.
Kwankwaso further hinted at the possibility of working again with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar despite past political disagreements.
“We might still work together before election day. We left because of issues we considered detrimental, but we are not fighting anybody,” he said.
He also noted that both the Kwankwasiyya movement and the Obidient Movement share similar values and could collaborate effectively.
“The Kwankwasiyya are disciplined and positive, and so are the Obidients,” he stated.
Kwankwaso went on to criticise governors across the country, alleging that many of them were relying heavily on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for political survival ahead of the 2027 elections.
“Our governors have made many mistakes. I can tell you that many governors are relying on Bola Ahmed Tinubu to win elections,” he said.
He also claimed that political expectations among Northern Nigerians had changed significantly.
“Things have changed. Northerners no longer want rice or chicken like before,” Kwankwaso added.
