Abia Moves to End Dependence on National Grid, Eyes Alternative Power Sources — Alex Otti

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has said the state can no longer rely solely on the national electricity grid, noting that his administration is actively pursuing alternative energy sources to drive its industrialisation agenda.
Otti made this known on Wednesday while receiving the Managing Director of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company, Jennifer Adighije, at the Government House in Umuahia.
He explained that stable electricity remains central to the growth of key commercial hubs such as Aba and Umuahia, stressing that the state government is open to partnerships with any organisation capable of improving power supply.
The governor added that what matters most to Abia State is consistent and reliable electricity, whether it comes from the national grid or from independent power solutions that can support economic development and industrial expansion.
In her response, Adighije announced that the 450-megawatt section of the Alaoji Power Plant has been restored after being inactive for several years.
She stated that the facility is now expected to contribute about 375 megawatts of electricity to the national grid.
Adighije also assured the Abia State Government of improved electricity supply and reaffirmed the Niger Delta Power Holding Company’s commitment to supporting the state’s industrialisation drive through stronger power generation and distribution.
