The management of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE), Rumuolumeni, Rivers State, has suspended all remaining activities scheduled for the Students’ Union Government (SUG) Week following reports of a security incident on the institution’s campus.
The university, in a statement signed by its Registrar, Dr Chinonye Abraham Ajie, directed students to return to their respective classes on Thursday, August 13, 2026, for normal academic activities.
The suspension came amid reports that a male 100-level student of the Faculty of Education was allegedly shot during an incident on the university premises.
However, as of the time of filing this report, neither the university management nor the Rivers State Police Command had officially confirmed the reported shooting or provided details on the condition of the alleged victim.
An eyewitness who spoke about the incident claimed that the shooting occurred within the Faculty of Education. According to the witness, the affected student was subsequently taken to a hospital for medical attention.
The witness further alleged that the hospital was demanding N300,000 for surgery, prompting the student’s course mates to reportedly begin contributing money towards his treatment.
The circumstances surrounding the reported shooting remained unclear as of press time, with no official statement from the university or the police confirming what led to the incident.
The eyewitness also alleged that students had earlier received intelligence suggesting that two rival cult groups on the campus had declared hostilities against each other, with alleged instructions reportedly issued to their members across the institution.
The witness expressed concern over the university’s handling of a previous security incident, describing the institution’s response as inadequate and embarrassing.
Meanwhile, the university management, in its official statement, announced the immediate suspension of all remaining SUG Week activities and warned students against actions capable of disrupting academic activities or threatening peace on campus.

«“Students are therefore advised to return to classes on Thursday August 13th, 2026 for normal academic activities. Any student who fails to attend lectures will be held responsible for their actions.»
«“Students are also strongly warned to desist from any action that is inimical to their academic pursuit and the peace of the University.”»
The university did not disclose the specific circumstances that prompted the suspension of the SUG Week activities.
