AWKA — Former Anambra State Governor and presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Peter Obi, has marked his 65th birthday by calling on Nigerians to embrace a life of service, compassion and sacrifice, while urging citizens to channel resources towards improving lives rather than lavish celebrations.
In a statement issued on Sunday to commemorate his birthday, Obi described birthdays as occasions for sober reflection, gratitude to God and renewed commitment to serving humanity.
According to him, such milestones should inspire individuals to assess how their lives have positively impacted others instead of focusing on personal celebrations.
He noted that while elaborate birthday celebrations may be appropriate in societies where basic needs have largely been met and institutions function efficiently, Nigeria’s current realities demand a different approach.
Obi said the country’s widespread poverty, unemployment, insecurity, poor healthcare and inadequate educational opportunities require collective responsibility and greater compassion from both leaders and citizens.
He stressed that Nigerians should direct available resources towards initiatives that improve lives and create lasting value for society.
“The greatest celebration of life is not what we receive from others, but the lives we are able to touch positively,” Obi stated.
The former governor explained that the philosophy of selfless service has guided him throughout his career in business, the corporate sector and public office, particularly during his administration as governor of Anambra State.
He recalled that on several occasions when individuals and organisations planned elaborate birthday celebrations or expensive gifts in his honour, he encouraged them to redirect the funds towards projects that would benefit communities.
According to Obi, the decision resulted in the construction of schools, hostel blocks, educational support programmes and other social infrastructure that continue to benefit less privileged Nigerians.
“The greatest honour anyone can receive is not found in gifts, ceremonies or public admiration, but in knowing that one’s life has contributed, however modestly, to making another person’s life better,” he added.
Obi Donates ₦10 Million to Rural Hospital
As part of activities marking his birthday, Obi attended a Thanksgiving Mass in Onitsha where he expressed gratitude to God for His protection, guidance and faithfulness throughout his life.
Following the church service, he visited St. Raphael’s Hospital in Umueri, Anambra East Local Government Area of Anambra State, where he donated ₦10 million to support healthcare services at the rural medical facility.
Obi said interacting with patients and healthcare workers further strengthened his conviction that leadership should be measured by the willingness to care for vulnerable people and improve their welfare.
He maintained that leaders have a responsibility to support those who cannot repay acts of kindness, describing compassionate leadership as a fundamental requirement for national development.
The former presidential candidate reiterated that investment in education and healthcare remains one of the most effective ways to secure Nigeria’s future.
“A hospital preserves life, while a school shapes the future. Supporting both is not merely charity but a strategic investment in humanity and national development,” he said.
John Nwosu Celebrates Obi at 65
Meanwhile, former governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the last Anambra State governorship election, Mr. John Nwosu, has congratulated Obi on his 65th birthday.
In a goodwill message, Nwosu described Obi as a leader whose life has consistently reflected integrity, accountability and visionary leadership.
He said Obi’s dedication to good governance, transparency and inclusive national development continues to inspire millions of Nigerians, particularly young people who desire positive leadership.
“We celebrate not only the gift of your life but also your enduring commitment to integrity, visionary leadership and the pursuit of a more prosperous, just and inclusive Nigeria,” Nwosu stated.
He prayed for God to grant Obi continued good health, wisdom, strength and many more years of impactful service to Nigeria and humanity.
