Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, has been elected as the new President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), making history as the second woman to lead the association since its establishment.
Badejo-Okusanya secured victory in the keenly contested presidential election after polling 12,317 votes, representing 47.18 per cent of the 26,106 valid votes cast.
The election was conducted through the NBA’s electronic voting system, which commenced at 7:35 a.m. on Saturday and concluded at 7:34 a.m. on Sunday, allowing eligible members across the country to participate.
She emerged victorious ahead of her two challengers, obtaining the highest number of votes in the exercise to clinch the association’s top leadership position.
Her election marks a significant milestone for the legal profession in Nigeria, as she becomes only the second female president in the history of the Nigerian Bar Association. Her victory has been widely viewed as a major step toward greater gender representation in the leadership of one of the country’s most influential professional bodies.
As the incoming NBA President, Badejo-Okusanya is expected to steer the affairs of the association, champion the welfare of legal practitioners, promote the rule of law, and address key issues affecting the legal profession and the administration of justice in Nigeria.
The official results released at the close of voting confirmed her victory after the successful completion of the electronic election process.
