Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has praised the large turnout of party members at the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary election, expressing satisfaction with the level of participation and support shown for Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, the party’s consensus candidate.
The governor arrived at Ward E3, St. Stephen’s (WAEC) School on Lagos Island alongside his wife, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, at approximately 11:44 a.m. on Thursday to participate in the primary election exercise.
Speaking shortly after casting his vote, Sanwo-Olu described the process as peaceful, orderly, and a strong demonstration of internal democracy within the party. He noted that the direct primary system had given party members at the grassroots level an opportunity to actively participate in selecting the party’s governorship candidate.
According to the governor, electoral officials and party representatives were present across the venue to ensure transparency and maintain the credibility of the process.
Sanwo-Olu also commended the atmosphere at the polling venue, noting that despite the significant crowd that gathered before noon, the environment remained calm and orderly. He disclosed that approximately 1,810 people participated in the exercise, describing the turnout as impressive and reflective of strong party engagement.
Declaring his support for Hamzat, the governor expressed confidence that the deputy governor would emerge as the APC flag-bearer and secure victory in the governorship election.
He further praised party leaders and APC officials from Abuja for ensuring that the primary election was conducted peacefully and transparently.
Also speaking during the exercise, Chairman of Lagos Island East Local Council Development Area, Alade Folawiyo, described the turnout as massive and encouraging.
Folawiyo expressed confidence in Hamzat’s ability to lead the state, stating that the deputy governor possesses the experience and understanding needed to govern effectively.
He added that continuity in leadership would help sustain ongoing infrastructural development projects and strengthen security efforts across Lagos State.
