The Lagos State Government is engaging in discussions with the Ogun State Government to extend Phase 2 of the Blue Line metro rail project, currently being constructed by the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC).
Engr. Olasukanmi Okusaga, Director of Rail Transport at the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transportation Authority (LAMATA), made this announcement during an inspection of the ongoing construction project. This information was shared via LAMATA’s official X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday.
Engr. Okusaga expressed contentment with the progress of the project and disclosed ongoing talks with the Ogun State government to extend the Blue Line further into Agbara.
The project, which was awarded in 2023, is expected to take three years to complete. It will encompass six stations in Festac, Alakija, Trade Fair, Volkswagen, LASU, and Okokomaiko, as well as the construction of three bridges in Maza Maza, Satellite Town, and LASU, covering a 14-kilometer stretch. Additionally, plans are in place to construct a depot in Okokomaiko.
The Lagos Blue Line light rail, part of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) system, spans 27km. The inaugural phase, completed by CCECC in 2023, covered a 13km distance from Lagos Marina to Mile 2. Commercial operations commenced in September of the same year, with CCECC taking on operational responsibilities.
Within the first four months of passenger service, the Blue Line transported 583,000 passengers from September 4, 2023, to January 4, 2024. By its 219th day of operation, ridership exceeded one million individuals, with over one million passengers conveyed across 9,322 train rides.
